Shazam!

Young Billy Batson was wandering down an abandoned subway tunnel when he was confronted by the ancient wizard, Shazam. Shazam named Billy as his successor to fight evil on Earth and gave him the great powers that his name stood for: wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. The wizard was then crushed by a large block of stone. By saying the wizard's name, Billy was transformed into Captain Marvel.

Probably the most controversial figure made by DCD so far. While the sculpt seems to be a loose amalgam of early Captain Marvel designs, it is nicely rendered. However, many details are off. The compromise of some yellow, some gold deco has left many fans cold, as has the pose, with Marvel looking down. He is also somewhat smaller than other DCD figures, making him out of scale. Nowhere near as out of scale as Billy, though. A great sculpt on the kid, but boy is he small for a 10 year old! I've included a pic by C.C. Beck showing the correct proportions for the two, plus a comparison shot of the DCD and Hasbro versions. I prefer the DCD one, but not by much (Hasbro's is more in scale, but slightly too tall). This two-pack also came with a rotating base that had cardboard backgrounds of Shazam's cave and WHIZ radio studios, along with a microphone for Billy. This is another figure that I am dying to love, but it's just not there yet. Hopefully, DCD will release an single-carded Jerry Ordway version down the road.

Still the best Marvel Family web page.
