DC Direct Scale Custom Figures

What are custom figures, you ask? Well, basically it's just taking an existing figure and adding various materials to it to transform it into a different character, most often one that has not been released.

There are many fantastic resources for introductions into making custom figures, and links to folks' custom figure galleries. This page is mainly to highlight the folks who are making customs that fit in with the existing DC Direct figures, but I highly recommend checking out the work of other customizers.

I'm also including a link below to point those who may want to try doing these in the right direction.

Here is an example of a Batman custom I did using the DCD Dr. Fate figure. I roughly tried to follow the style of Steve Rude's Batman from the World's Finest limited series.

I cut off the shoulder pads, shaved down his ears, and pried off his amulet with a screwdriver. I then used Sculpey to fashion his cape, cowl, and belt, and fill in the hole in his chest made by the amulet.

I also cut off his right hand fingers and sculpted a fist. I cut the edges of Fate's cape to make it more like Batman's. I also added treads to his boots, although you cannot see them. I then boiled the figure to cure the sculpey without melting the figure. It was painted with flat acrylics to match the general look of DCD figures.

The final step was to wedge the tips of a plastic fork into his crotch joint to spread his legs out and make him stand straighter. It may sound painful, but it worked like a charm.

Although there are many different polymer clays out there, I prefer Sculpey due to it's versatility. I also recommend cutting a box of Sculpey II with 2-3 packs of Sculpey III. This makes it firmer and easier to shape.

I have more customs in the works, and will post them here once they are finished. In the meantime, please be sure to visit the great work of the folks below.

You should be able to find enough to get started making custom figures hidden away at the Custom Corner.

DCD Custom Links

Iron-Cow Productions - Quite simply, Casimir and Matt are the 800 pound gorillas of the customizing world right now. Excellent works, and so many it will leave you cringing in jealousy.

Cool Collecting - Tim Priebe's page full of his and others' customs. Also the home of the magnificent Custom Cons.

Valor's Custom Figures - A fantastic page of customs, with probably my favorite custom page design. (Iron-Cow is a very close runner up!)

Chimerical Customs - Felix Faust's customs shown here may only be compter generated, but they're too cool not to include! Click Here to see some of his real work.

TigerDuck's Customs - Tigerduck's just getting started, but we see great things in his future!
